Icelandic warm water
We Icelanders love our hot water and the sheer number of public swimming pools in Iceland is a testament to that. At any given day you will almost always meet locals enjoying a swim or relaxing in the hot tub chatting about politics and other serious matters as the pricing of groceries nowadays. On those precious sunny summer days all the pools are packed with people tanning and stacking up on vitamin D.
When Icelanders travel around the country and feel like do something extra special they visit natural geothermal pools. And for a good reason. You will never forget the experience of lying all warm and cosy in a natural pool in the middle of nowhere. One of the most popular natural geothermal pools in Iceland are Landmannalaugar.
Landmannalaugar is in the Icelandic southern highlands and a very popular destination with Icelanders and tourists. The natural geothermal pools are the perfect temperature for travelers to enjoy a relaxing soak in nature. The pools are at the northern end of a popular hiking trail called Laugavegur. Not to be confused with Laugavegur, our main shopping street in Reykjavík. It has happened that tourists have come to Iceland to walk this famous hiking trail but end in the middle of Reykjavík shopping district looking very confused. If you would like to learn more about traveling by land in Landmannalaugar check out this post, this one or this one. Just keep in mind the roads leading there are F roads (mountain roads)which are only accessible in summertime. You can find information on the roads and driving here.
Landmannalaugar are found between glistening black lava fields of Laugahraun and colorful Rhyolite mountains. This area is so breathtaking that I promise once you´re there, your camera memory card will fill up very quickly.
Landmannalaugar is a very hard to reach area as the roads are not easily accessible and only open during summer. We however have the luxury of not having to worry about roads and therefore visit this area all year around. From air you can really appreciate the beauty of the undulating valleys in various colors mixing in with the black lava and green moss. The birds eye view of this geological marvel is nothing short of magical.
We love taking people to the these remote highlands and showcasing this other worldly landscape from the best viewing spots. Our guests often bring their swimsuits with them to enjoy a relaxing moment in the natural geothermal pools.
